RSV

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Vaccination

Learn about this new programme below

From September 2024 a new vaccination programme begins against Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV). You can read more about RSV on this NHS page. You will see that it is normally a mild illness but it can be more significant in those aged over 75 especially if they have chronic health problems. Vaccination helps reduce your risk of becoming unwell with an RSV infection. The vaccination is normally given in the upper arm as per a flu vaccination.

Non-urgent advice: Eligible groups for vaccination

Those aged 75 to 79
Those pregnant who are at least 28 weeks into their pregnancy

The vaccine

The vaccination is called Abrysvo and is made by Pfizer. You can read the patient information leaflet here which includes information on potential side effects. In clinical studies the vaccine has shown to provide good protection for at least 2 years and it is expected that the protective effect lasts longer than this. The vaccination can be given at the same time as a Pneumonia and Shingles vaccinations. It is not normally given at the same time as Flu and COVID vaccinations.

How to book

To get booked in for your vaccination you can contact the surgery by phone (normally best in the afternoons). If you have a mobile number or email address on your record then you should be sent a booking link which you can use so you may want to wait a bit for one of these before phoning the surgery.
